Syngenta Canada has introduced Incipio foliar insecticide for potatoes and specialty crops, expanding its insecticide portfolio with a product based on PLINAZOLIN technology, a novel active ingredient developed by the company.

The product is registered for use on potatoes, apples, brassica head and stem vegetables, brassica leafy greens, cucurbits, leafy vegetables excluding head lettuce, fruiting vegetables, tuberous and corm vegetables, as well as pome and stone fruits.

Incipio is designed to provide foliar protection against a broad range of insect and mite pests. Its formulation remains on leaf surfaces and is designed to provide residual activity, UV stability and two-hour rainfastness.

“Incipio brings something exciting to the market for potatoes and specialty crop growers as the only Group 30 with such a broad reach across crops and pests,” said Cheryl Trueman, Syngenta insecticide and fungicide technical lead for potato and specialty crops. “The novel active ingredient, PLINAZOLIN technology, is designed to deliver high efficacy and residual control of target pests in a fast-acting, dependable formulation.”

For potato growers, the product targets Colorado potato beetle, potato leafhoppers and European corn borer. Syngenta says visible results against Colorado potato beetle can occur within two days.

The Group 30 classification also gives growers another mode of action for resistance-management programmes. Syngenta said Incipio has no known cross-resistance with other modes of action and can be rotated with products from different insecticide groups targeting the same pests.

In specialty crops, Incipio is positioned for use against pests including flea beetles, diamondback moth, imported cabbageworm and cabbage looper in brassicas. In apples, it provides a new mode of action for mite control across multiple life stages, including eggs.

The company says the product rapidly stops target pests from feeding and can provide control for up to 14 days in crops such as apples, cucurbits and brassicas.

Incipio will be available for the 2027 growing season in a suspension concentrate formulation. It will be sold in cases containing four 0.81-litre containers, with application rates varying according to crop and target pest.

In potatoes, one case is sufficient to treat 80 acres for Colorado potato beetle or 53 acres when targeting European corn borer. In apples, a case treats 53 acres, while in brassica crops it covers 80 acres.

Syngenta said the product has broad tank-mix compatibility and can be incorporated into insect-resistance-management programmes for Ontario horticultural crops.
