BASF, Yuntianhua target nitrogen losses with new fertiliser technology

BASF and Yuntianhua are deepening their collaboration to develop and commercialise a new nitrification inhibitor in China, targeting nitrogen losses, fertiliser efficiency and emissions from agricultural production

BASF Agricultural Solutions and Chinese fertiliser producer Yuntianhua are expanding their longstanding partnership to advance the development and commercialisation of Ampliqan DMPSA-K2, a nitrification inhibitor launched by BASF in China in September 2026. The collaboration aims to improve nitrogen use efficiency while supporting efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of fertiliser application.

The companies signed an agreement on September 3 at BASF's headquarters in Germany, following a visit by a Yuntianhua delegation led by Chairman Song Liqiang to BASF's headquarters and its Agricultural Center in Limburgerhof. The discussions covered fertiliser-efficiency technologies, carbon-reduction certification initiatives and digital farming solutions.

The agreement also includes brand-licensing arrangements for the Ampliqan portfolio, alongside cooperation on the development and commercialisation of the new nitrification inhibitor in China.

Ampliqan DMPSA-K2 is designed to slow the conversion of ammonium nitrogen into nitrate in soil, helping reduce nitrogen losses through nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions. According to BASF, the formulation offers handling convenience, storage stability and compatibility with major nitrogen fertilisers.

By helping retain nitrogen in forms available to crops for longer, the technology is intended to improve fertiliser efficiency and create potential benefits for farmers through higher yield potential, better crop quality and greater flexibility in fertiliser application. Actual outcomes will depend on crop type, soil conditions, weather and farm management practices.

The partnership builds on earlier cooperation between BASF and Yuntianhua, including the promotion and application of a urease inhibitor and carbon-reduction certification projects linked to fertiliser-efficiency technologies. The companies are continuing to explore solutions aimed at improving resource use and supporting more sustainable agricultural production in China.

The expanded agreement reflects a wider industry focus on improving nutrient efficiency as farmers and fertiliser manufacturers face pressure to increase agricultural productivity while managing input costs and environmental impacts. For BASF and Yuntianhua, the next step will be to translate the technology into broader commercial adoption across China's fertiliser market.
