BASF has partnered with global agribusiness company Bunge to process its InVigor Gold canola seed, advancing the commercialisation of a new hybrid designed to expand canola production into hotter, drier growing environments and soils with lower organic matter.
The agreement marks a key step towards the planned US launch of InVigor Gold in 2027. Bunge will initially support processing through its facility in Warden, Washington, helping establish a route from farm production to market access for growers adopting the new crop.
Developed by BASF Agricultural Solutions, InVigor Gold is a canola-quality Brassica juncea hybrid designed to unlock production potential in growing conditions that can be challenging for conventional canola. Its grain meets canola-quality standards affirmed by the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) and can be delivered directly or co-mingled with traditional black-seed canola (Brassica napus) for processing.
The processing arrangement addresses a key requirement for introducing a new crop into established agricultural markets: ensuring growers have access to the infrastructure needed to move their harvest into commercial supply chains.
“Working with an industry leader like Bunge is an important step as we prepare to bring InVigor Gold to farmers doing the Biggest Job on Earth,” said Hugo Borsari, Vice President of Business Management for Seeds North America at BASF Agricultural Solutions. He added that the hybrid is intended to open up additional canola acreage in more challenging growing environments, giving farmers another option to consider in their crop rotations.
BASF introduced InVigor Gold to growers in 2025 as an innovation built around the genetic potential of canola-quality Brassica juncea. In June 2026, the company announced InVigor Gold L322, the first hybrid in the portfolio, with initial commercial availability planned for growers in Montana, North Dakota and Washington from 2027.
For Bunge, the partnership brings its oilseed processing capabilities into the launch strategy for a new canola hybrid as production opportunities expand across North America.
“We’re excited to work with BASF to support the introduction of InVigor Gold to our customers,” said Mark Riou, Bunge’s Senior Director, Canola Trading – North America. He said reliable processing and market access would be important to building grower confidence and supporting the crop's long-term development.
By leveraging its processing infrastructure, beginning with the Warden facility, Bunge aims to help establish a clear route from farm to market while supporting the continued evolution of the North American canola industry.
The partnership strengthens the commercial groundwork for BASF's planned 2027 launch. Its longer-term significance will depend on grower adoption, production performance under challenging conditions and the ability to integrate InVigor Gold into existing canola processing and marketing channels.
