Lenovo has launched its Innovations in Sustainability initiative, in collaboration with AMD and ITE, to support SMEs in their green digital transformation journey and empower students to be the next generation of the digital workforce in Singapore.
The initiative encompasses the launch of two new labs, Sustainability Lab and eXtended Reality Centre
(XRC), and two Certificate of Competency (CoC) courses, to equip SMEs and students with industry specific knowledge on sustainable technologies, as well as hands-on experience in leveraging these
technologies, to drive a greener, more sustainable future.
The initiative is also aligned with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 to create new jobs, transform industries, and harness sustainability as a competitive advantage. The two new labs were unveiled yesterday at the annual Singapore Week of Innovation & Technology (SWITCH) 2023.
“The dynamic partnership between Lenovo, AMD, and ITE is a key example of our commitment to make the world more sustainable through our innovative technology applications and the scale of our global business. SMEs are the backbone of Singapore’s economy, and by enabling these businesses with sustainable digital transformation skills and tools, we can collectively catalyze the community for a smarter and greener future,” said Nigel Lee, General Manager at Lenovo Singapore.
“By providing students and professionals alike with hands-on experience in the fields of green digital transformation, the two labs will serve as catalysts for fostering a thriving ecosystem and the next generation of talents in green skills and jobs – a significant step in driving a greener, more sustainable future for Singapore,” he added.
“As a technology leader, Lenovo believes that technology can and should be a positive catalyst for change. Our collaboration with AMD and ITE exemplifies our commitment to meeting our ESG targets, including achieving net zero by 2050. By embracing smarter technology like high-performance computing and working with like-minded partners, we are not just opening doors, but making strides in scaling and advancing data-driven decision processes for ESG initiatives – to shape a sustainable and responsible future together,” said Sumir Bhatia, President of the Infrastructure Solutions Group at Lenovo Asia Pacific.
Sustainability Lab
Powered by Lenovo’s Digital Workplace Solutions (DWS) which incorporates Artificial Intelligence (AI), ITE’s new Sustainability Lab aims to equip SMEs with industry-specific digital strategies, tools, and sustainable growth models. Lenovo will also work with AMD and ITE to train companies on how to develop a green digital transformation blueprint to meet Singapore’s revised carbon tax in 2024.
As part of the initiative, Lenovo and ITE have rolled out the Green Digital Transformation 2.0 Certificate of Competency (CoC) course, supported by AMD. The course examines digital transformation frameworks and strategies, and how to integrate sustainability into digital transformation initiatives.
Lenovo will also work with AMD and its sustainability ecosystem partners, exclusively with Rentalworks and TES to introduce Rentalworks ThinkEco Leasing program. This initiative aims to extend the lifecycles of devices, resulting in a notable reduction in electronic waste. Rentalworks will acquire devices from Lenovo and offer them for lease, making advanced technology accessible at affordable rates. This promotes a circular economy by enabling these devices to be utilized efficiently for an extended period, benefiting both the academic community and businesses. An extension of Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Services for CO2 offset services, the leasing program offers Lenovo carbon offset options in leasing plans for old and new devices so that businesses can opt for valuable service (DaaS) to reduce and neutralize their carbon footprint.
eXtended Reality Centre (XRC)
With the adoption of digital twin projects, augmented lessons that mirror real-life experiences, and practicing and accessing situations without the physical constraints of being on-site, the XRC lab aims to provide immersive experiences and remote collaboration for participants. The initiative looks to conduct 20 XRC projects, as well as train 720 students and 270 adult learners across a three-year period. Thus far, Lenovo and SFX Corp have taught some 20 ITE students and staff to use the Transform Reality software to create metaverse sets. With these simulated sets, users can be trained in work processes in the metaverse before trying it out physically. In the workplace, these can be used to simulate proof of concept.
As part of its CET Training for Lifelong Learning, ITE will co-develop short courses with Lenovo and AMD, including a Certificate in Competency (CoC) course to train adult learners on Digital Twinning and Extended Reality Assets Creation. The course aims to equip participants with the basic concepts of Digital Twinning and Extended Reality Assets Creation, including creating virtual replicas of real-world objects, systems, and environments using cutting-edge technology; and explore Extended Reality (XR) through hands-on experience in creating XR assets.
