Acquisition brings Breatheway system into Chiquita-backed supply chain platform
TransFRESH Corporation, a subsidiary of Chiquita Holdings Limited, has acquired freshness-technology innovator Hazel Technologies in a move aimed at strengthening its position in post-harvest preservation and extending shelf life across the global fresh produce supply chain.
The deal integrates Hazel Technologies’ proprietary Breatheway system and its scientific capabilities into TransFRESH’s operations, enhancing the company’s existing Tectrol pallet bag solutions with advanced modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) technology.
The acquisition comes as produce suppliers face growing pressure to reduce food waste, improve cold-chain efficiency, and maintain quality across increasingly complex global logistics networks.
TransFRESH said the immediate focus will be on applying Hazel’s technology to the berry category, where precise atmospheric control and temperature-responsive packaging are critical to preserving freshness during transport and storage.
Hazel Technologies’ system uses smart membrane technology designed to regulate oxygen and carbon dioxide levels within packaging environments, dynamically adjusting to temperature changes and produce respiration rates.
Beyond berries, the acquisition also opens pathways into broader applications, including bananas and other tropical fruits, offering potential synergies across Chiquita’s global supply chain operations.
Executives said the combination strengthens the company’s long-term strategy to build an integrated platform for freshness science across multiple categories.
“This acquisition represents a pivotal milestone in our strategy to develop and operate the industry’s most advanced freshness technologies,” said John P. Olivo, president of TransFRESH Corporation.
With the deal, TransFRESH is positioning itself not just as a packaging provider, but as a technology-driven freshness solutions platform spanning the global produce industry.
