Advanced formulation delivers enhanced weed control, improved crop safety and greater operational efficiency for growers
BASF has announced the launch of Basta ULTRA in Australia, marking the introduction of the next generation of its widely trusted non-selective herbicide powered by the company’s advanced Glu-L technology.
Building on more than three decades of proven Basta herbicide performance, the new formulation has been designed to deliver superior weed control, enhanced convenience, and improved operational efficiency for growers across Australia’s diverse horticultural systems.
The launch reflects BASF’s continued focus on providing innovative crop protection solutions that address evolving agricultural challenges around productivity, sustainability, and resistance management.
Parvana Wali, Head of Agricultural Solutions at BASF Australia and New Zealand, said growers across Australia have relied on Basta for more than 30 years, and the introduction of Basta ULTRA represents a significant advancement in both performance and technology.
She noted that the upgraded formulation has been developed to help growers navigate increasing demands around efficiency, crop safety, and sustainable farming practices.
Basta ULTRA offers powerful knock-down control across more than 100 annual and perennial weed species, including grasses and broadleaf weeds, making it suitable for a wide range of horticultural applications including tree crops, vineyards, and vegetable production systems.
The company stated that the new formulation delivers enhanced crop safety compared with glyphosate while also serving as an effective alternative to paraquat, offering growers broader flexibility in weed management strategies.
A key advantage of Basta ULTRA lies in its lower application rate, which helps reduce manual handling requirements as well as storage and transportation burdens for growers and distributors.
The herbicide also incorporates BASF’s new “lock” formulation technology, engineered to improve droplet retention and minimise spray bounce-off and application loss. This enhanced retention capability contributes to more efficient herbicide coverage and improved weed control outcomes in the field.
In addition, Basta ULTRA becomes rainfast within six hours of application, reducing the likelihood of product wash-off and limiting the need for repeat applications under variable weather conditions.
BASF said these improvements are expected to help growers reduce overall herbicide usage while enhancing weed control efficiency and operational productivity.
The product has now received registration approval from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and is expected to be available shortly through authorised BASF distributors across Australia.
With the launch of Basta ULTRA, BASF aims to further strengthen its position in Australia’s crop protection market while supporting growers with next-generation herbicide technologies designed to improve productivity, stewardship, and long-term sustainability outcomes.
