Australia’s Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has received license application DIR 218 from All Aussie Avocados Pty Ltd (operating as All Aussie Farmers) seeking approval for the commercial cultivation of genetically modified (GM) tomatoes with purple-colored fruit
The GM Purple Tomato is planned for commercial cultivation in greenhouses across Australia, though certain States and Territories may impose restrictions due to marketing or biosecurity concerns. Once approved, the GM Purple Tomato and its derived products would enter general commerce, including human food consumption. Availability in Australia will depend on meeting all regulatory requirements, including clearances from the Gene Technology Regulator, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
The OGTR is currently preparing the Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan for the application. This document is expected to be released for public consultation in September 2025, inviting feedback from experts, agencies, and authorities, with a minimum 30-day period for submitting comments.
