Pilot Plant at Taipower’s Taichung Facility to Capture 2,000 Tons of CO₂ Annually in Initial Phase
BASF has entered into a license agreement with Carbon Cap Applications Technology Co. (CCAT) to supply its OASE blue gas treatment technology for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Taichung Power Plant’s Carbon Reduction Technology Park, operated by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), the country’s largest electricity provider.
This collaboration merges BASF’s proven flue gas treatment technology with CCAT’s engineering expertise to support Taiwan’s first commercial CCS demonstration project. The pilot, launched in late 2023, aims to capture 2,000 tons of CO₂ annually in its initial phase. Pending successful results, Taipower plans to explore a large-scale facility targeting one million tons of CO₂ capture per year. Initially, the captured CO₂ will be sequestered onsite, with offshore geological storage under consideration for future phases.
OASE blue, developed by BASF, is a high-efficiency gas treatment technology used in carbon capture across various industries including fossil power, cement, and maritime sectors. It offers over 90 per cent CO₂ capture efficiency, low energy and amine consumption, and modular scalability, with potential to produce food-grade CO₂ purity.

The CCS project is part of Taipower’s broader strategy to phase out coal by transitioning to gas-fired generation while integrating advanced emissions reduction technologies.
